Whenever you install a new application on Windows 8, there is a small notification on the upper right hand corner that says "You have new apps that can open this type of file" whenever you open up a file that is associated with a previous program and now has a new program to open it up. To disable or enable these notifications in Windows 8, here is what you have to do:
1. Go to Local Group Policy Editor by typing gpedit.msc and pressing Enter in Metro Menu
2. Now navigate to Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates,Windows Components, and open File Explorer. Now double click on Do not show the "new application installed" notification.
3. To disable the notification, select Enabled and to enable it, select Disabled
