How to add and install new desktop icons in Windows 8

Another cool way to customize Windows 8 is to add and install new desktop icons. If that is of interest to you, read our instructions. Full guide below.

Desktop icons are placed on the desktop for better user experience. These icons are shortcut to those applications installed in our machines. Sometimes you might not see icons like Computer, Recycle bin on your desktop. In that case, you may want to add those desktop icons. You also may like to add desktop Icons of ‘Network’, “Control Panel” or “User’s Files.

Changing The Default Icons

Just follow this simple tutorial to add or remove Desktop Icons.

1. Open the Desktop by clicking Desktop tile on the Start Screen on your Windows 8. Or you can press Windows and M simultaneously.

2. Now, Right click on your desktop and select Personalize.


3. Click on Change desktop icons at the top-right corner.

4. Next, check the icons you want to show on your desktop. Then just simply Click on the Apply and then OK.

Press OK

You are done. Here on the snapshot you can see that “Control Panel” icon has been added successfully.

If you want to add new icons: Select one of the icons, click on Change Icon… and browse to a .ico file that you can use as a desktop icon

Now, whenever you want to add or remove Desktop Icons follow the same steps. You may add Shortcuts of “My Computer”, “Network” or “User’s Files” but Desktop Icons Look far better than their shortcuts. There will be no arrow sign like shortcuts.

Placing the Desktop Icons in proper place makes computing easier and faster. This tutorial is a very basic customization tutorial.
