Why would you want to merge partitions?
Whenever a new hard disk is installed on a computer, as an administrator, you are required to create at least one partition so that you can install an operating system on it. While installing Microsoft Windows 8 the very first partition that you create is automatically assigned with drive letter D:. Reason behind this is that C: is by default assigned to the system reserved partition that is automatically created before installing Windows 8. This system reserved partition, in Windows 8, is of 350 MB.
Once you have installed Windows 8 operating system on your computer you can create other partitions as well. Sometimes when you create a partition of, say 100 GB, it can be sufficient for a few days. After some days you might want to increase the assigned space of the partition and for that, in earlier versions of Windows, you are required to delete the entire partition and re-create it assigning the desired space. However in Windows 8 you can extend the partition to increase the space allotted to a single one.
As a Windows 8 administrator if you want to do extend a partition, just follow the steps given below:
1 Logon to Windows 8 computer with administrator account.
2 Click on Start button and from the available options click on Control Panel.
3 On the opened window click on More Settings from the list in the left pane.
4 On the next window click on Administrative Tools.
5 On Administrative Tools window double-click on Computer Management icon.
6 On Computer Management snap-in click on Disk Management from the left pane.
7 From the right pane right click on any already created partition to which you want to add extra space and from the available context menu click on Extend Volume.
8 On the opened wizard click on Next button on the welcome page.

11 On the final page click on Finish button to complete the process.
