Why would you want to merge partitions?

Whenever a new hard disk is installed on a computer, as an administrator, you are required to create at least one partition so that you can install an operating system on it. While installing Microsoft Windows 8 the very first partition that you create is automatically assigned with drive letter D:. Reason behind this is that C: is by default assigned to the system reserved partition that is automatically created before installing Windows 8. This system reserved partition, in Windows 8, is of 350 MB.

Once you have installed Windows 8 operating system on your computer you can create other partitions as well. Sometimes when you create a partition of, say 100 GB, it can be sufficient for a few days. After some days you might want to increase the assigned space of the partition and for that, in earlier versions of Windows, you are required to delete the entire partition and re-create it assigning the desired space.
